Who this policy is for
Mapos is sold to retail businesses. The store that licenses Mapos decides what information is entered into it and is responsible for that information. We provide the software; we are not a party to the store's transactions and we do not hold its records.
If you are a shopper who bought something from a store that uses Mapos and you have a question about your purchase or your personal information, please contact that store directly — they hold the record, not us.
What the apps handle, and where it stays
| Information | Where it is stored |
|---|---|
| Sales, refunds, payments taken, inventory, purchase orders, suppliers, pricing | On the store's iPads and the store's own server computer, on the store's network |
| Employee names, PINs and permissions | Same. PINs are stored as a one-way hash, never as readable numbers |
| Customer accounts a store chooses to keep (for example a running tab) | Same, and only where the store has entered them |
| Age / ID verification, where a store uses it | Same, and the name read from an identity document is encrypted before it is written. It is used to record that a check took place. It is never sent to us. |
| Card payment details | Never in the app. Card data is read by the payment terminal and goes directly to the store's payment processor. Mapos receives only an approve-or-decline result and the last four digits printed on a receipt. |
What we do not do
- No analytics or tracking. The apps contain no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or attribution software of any kind, and no third-party code that collects information about you or the store.
- No advertising identifiers, no cross-app or cross-site tracking, and nothing is shared with data brokers.
- We never sell information. There is nothing to sell — we do not hold it.
- No store data on our systems. Store records are not uploaded to us and there is no Mapos account you sign into that holds them.
When information does leave the store's network
Three cases, all under the store's control:
- Payments. The payment terminal communicates with the store's payment processor to authorise a card. That is between the store, its processor and the card networks, under their own terms.
- Reports the store chooses to email. A store can have its server email a nightly sales summary to addresses it chooses, sent through the store's own email account. It goes where the store directs it; it does not come to us.
- Public lottery information. Where a store sells lottery tickets, the store's server fetches publicly published game data from the Massachusetts State Lottery website. No store or customer information is sent in that request.
Support access
If a store asks us for help, a member of our team may connect to the store's server computer remotely, or visit in person, to diagnose a problem. This happens only at the store's request and with the store present, and it can be ended by the store at any time. While assisting, we may see the store's information on screen. We do not copy or retain it, and we use it only to resolve the issue we were asked about.
Backups
Mapos makes automatic backups of a store's records. Those backups are written to the store's own computer, and to any additional location the store chooses. They are not sent to us.
Children
Mapos is business software used by store staff. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
How long information is kept
The store decides. Records live in the store's own database for as long as the store keeps them, and a store can delete them at any time. Because we do not hold copies, a request to delete information should be made to the store.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to see, correct or delete personal information a business holds about you. As the software vendor we are not the holder of that information — please contact the store you dealt with. If you are a store using Mapos and you need help exercising a request in your own records, contact us and we will assist you.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be communicated to the stores that license Mapos.
